AAP Safe Sleep Checklist

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends these practices for every sleep, every time:

  • Back to sleep, every sleep — Place baby on their back for all naps and nighttime sleep until age 1.
  • Firm, flat sleep surface — Use a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or portable play yard with a firm mattress.
  • No soft objects or loose bedding — No pillows, blankets, bumper pads, or positioners in the sleep area.
  • Room temperature 68–72°F (20–22°C) — Dress baby in one extra layer compared to what you are wearing.
  • Pacifier at sleep time — Offering a pacifier is associated with reduced SIDS risk. No need to reinsert if it falls out.
  • \!
Avoid overheating — Do not use sleep sacks with fill rating heavier than needed. Watch for sweating or flushed cheeks.
  • \!
No smoking near baby — Secondhand smoke significantly increases SIDS risk. Keep all sleep environments smoke-free.
