Readiness Signs for Solids

Before starting any solids, look for all four of these signs. Age alone is not enough.

1
Sits up with minimal support — good head and neck control is essential for safe swallowing
2
Shows interest in food — watches you eat, reaches toward your plate, opens mouth when food approaches
3
Lost tongue thrust reflex — does not automatically push food out of mouth with tongue
4
Approximately doubled birth weight — typically happens around 4–6 months; a general readiness indicator

<\!-- Choking Hazards Card -->
⚠️ Choking Hazards by Age
⚠️ Never leave baby unattended while eating. Always serve food at the table in an upright seat. Learn infant choking response before starting solids.

🚫 Under 12 months — NEVER give:

  • Whole grapes or cherry tomatoes
  • Raw hard vegetables (carrots, celery)
  • Whole nuts or large nut pieces
  • Hot dog rounds
  • Popcorn
  • Raisins and dried fruit
  • Hard candy or chewy candy
  • Large chunks of any food
  • Honey (botulism risk)

⚠️ Under 24 months — use caution:

  • Grapes: cut into quarters
  • Cherry tomatoes: halve or quarter
  • Cooked carrots: soft & cut into strips
  • Peanut butter: thin layer only
  • Hard fruit: cook or cut very thin
  • Large chunks of meat
  • String cheese: shred or cut small
  • Corn kernels: mash or avoid
<\!-- BLW vs Purées Comparison -->
🥄 BLW vs. Purées vs. Hybrid Approach

Baby-Led Weaning

  • ✓ Self-feeding from the start
  • ✓ Promotes motor development
  • ✓ Explores textures naturally
  • ✓ May reduce picky eating later
  • ✗ Messier, harder to track intake
Independent feeder
🥄

Purées

  • ✓ Easier to monitor intake
  • ✓ Gentler texture transition
  • ✓ Less choking concern
  • ✓ Easier to introduce allergens
  • ✗ May slow self-feeding skills
Traditional approach

Hybrid Approach

  • ✓ Best of both methods
  • ✓ Purees + soft finger foods
  • ✓ Most flexibility
  • ✓ AAP-aligned
  • ✓ Works for most families
